Summarize
Now I will describe my personal opinion, and draw a short summary, cons and pros and so on....
Honestly, looking at the difference between the Tyros 5 and PSR SX900 above, I can say the following: that there are some important differences between these two keyboards, but each of these keyboards has a spotlight and deserves high value.
Now I will compare the main differences that for me personally I count important, and bellow I will describe only important items for my own option.
1. Year Of release
(Tyros 5: 2013 | PSR SX-900: 2019)
Yes, The Tyros 5 is still excellent and proffesional arranger keyboard, and it still actual keyboard, but the SX-900 is a NEW Keyboard at the moment. And in my option it is a one of the very important think.
2. Aftertouch
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX-900: NO)
For my option, the keys in the ability to aftertouch is very important. This gives the musician the ability to control the keyboard and sounds more widely, and this way the sounds will sound more believable. At the moment Yamaha only has aftertouch on the Tyros, Motif XF and Montage. I would be like to see this opportunity on PSR SX-900. So, aftertouch is not a new technology, And used by other manufacturers such as Roland and Korg for a very long time. Yes, I agree, maybe this is a marketing ploy of Yamaha Corporation. But in my opinion, there are some options that would be nice to see on the PSR SX900.
3. S.Art.2! Voices
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX900: NO)
S.Art2! Voices are high-quality sounds that re-create the feeling of an actual instrument when performing. As mentioned above, Tyros 5 has 44 S.Art.2! Voices.
4. Sliders and Cross Fader
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX-900: NO)
Sliders help us control the management of sounds (Volume, Effects etc.) Real-Time and very easy.
Cross fader lets you adjust the volume balance between MIDI Song playback and Audio file playback. Moving the fader to the left increases the volume of MIDI Song playback, while moving it to the right increases the volume of Audio playback.
Yes, I understand that if you add sliders and Cross Fader to the Yamaha PSR SX-900, it will already look like a Genos, That’s why I don’t think this is a flaw of SX900.
5. Voice and Style
I don't think that there are very distinguished differences in Voice and Styles of there keyboards. Quality and Quantity of Tyros 5 and PSR SX900 is very useful. Yes, there is a slight difference in the number of voices and styles, But I do not consider this as an important option, since both od there instrument has the ability to create own styles and voices, buy extension packs, or download almost any content for free.
6. Mono/Poly Button
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX-900: NO)
I'm sorry that Yamaha Corporation did not include the Mono/Poly button on the PSR SX900. Since I think this is a button, is very important to easily control sounds. In order to turn on Mono/Poly option, we will need to take few steps, which makes it difficult to use this option real-time. Yes, i understand, that here are another options to turn on Mono/Poly by another easy way, but real button will be esyest way. Yes, I know, that it is possible to use ASSIGNABLE button to configure/setup MONO/POLY function. But any way I be would like separate MONO/POLY button.
7. Hard Disk Drive
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX-900: NO)
I do not consider this option as important. But it would be nice to add more space for example using SSD or Hard Drive on PSR SX900. Of course, we can use USB Flash Memory to have more space. But it would be nice to have more internal memory by using Hard Drive or SSD.
8. Display Out
(Tyros 5: YES | PSR SX-900: YES USB)
In order to connect a computer monitor or display the screen on a TV of PSR SX900, we need to buy an additional adapter. I don’t understand why Yamaha Corporation did not add VGA or HDMI Out on New Yamaha PSR SX-900 Keyboard. And Why we need to take another USB Port and buy additional adaptor for display out. My small investigation showed that USB to VGA adapter is quite expensive. In my own option, I don't think that it is good idea.
9. Joystick
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
So, finally, we have reached one of the most important things. YES! Yamaha Did it after years of production.
The Joystick controller offers intuitive pitch and modulation control, allowing for rapid trills, expressive pitch bends and fully managed modulation. The Modulation Hold button above the Joystick let's you lock your modulation choice, so you can focus on pitch bends, or on your playing.
I think it is excellent idea for New Yamaha Keyboards. Finally, we got the long-awaited Joystick on Yamaha PSR SX-900, and I very hope, that Yamaha Corporation will consider to chagne the Pitch Band and Modulation to joystick on all new releases of Yamaha Digital Arranger Keyboards. And so, I am proud to say that this global change can be considered historic change of YAMAHA. I really happy to use Joystick on Yamaha PSR SX-900.
10. Touch Screen
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
The 7" touch display and new graphic user interface provide intuitive control over the instrument's powerful features.
Yes, it can also be proudly announced as a global change to the PSR series keyboards. It is very difficult for me to describe my joy, when I first found out that Yamaha was producing PSR Series keyboards with a touch display. And I also consider, that this a very important event. So far I can not say anything about the quality of the touch screen of psr sx900. But I hope that this is done with high quality, and will not break for a short time. And as insurance, maybe I'll buy a touch screen protector for my PSR SX900, of course if I find it in exactly that size. If I find a sensor protector, I will leave a link in this article and describe my impression.
11. Effects
I'm very happy, that in PSR SX900 added much more preset effects such as reverb, chorus, guitar effects etc... than has in junior models. Even the Tyros 5 has less effect presets than PSR SX900.
12. Playlist
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
Playlist makes it easy to manage and call up your songs and the related settings, no matter how large your repertoire. Organize Registration Memories into convenient Playlists for instant recall during performance.
To be honest, I still can't find a time to use Playlist of PSR SX900. But for me it was also a pleasant surprise to have a playlist on the new Yamaha PSR model.
13. Chord Looper
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
The Chord Looper lets you record and loop a chord sequence, freeing your left hand so you can play two-handed passages, or manipulate sounds with any of the various assignable controllers.
We can endlessly talk about the new and wonderful possibilities of the new PSR. And one of the great option is Chord Looper. Of course, I extremally happy to use Chord Looper on my SX900 and it make my work much more easyer.
14.Style Section Reset
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
When playing with Styles, easily jump to the beginning of the bar by pressing the [RESET/TAP TEMPO] button. This Style Section Reset is particularly handy when accompanying singers or when playing music with varying time signatures.
Honestly, I do not consider adding this feature a very important event. I think it will be useful for new keyboardists who are just learning music. You can also make good bracks using multipad and style section reset button.
15. Bluetooth
(Tyros 5: NO | PSR SX-900: YES )
I waited a very long time for Yamaha to add Bluetooth on PSR Series keyboards. I think that the Bluetooth is important to every musician. So, you can play your backing tracks from your mobile phone to your PSR SX900 without connecting AUX Cables. Or you can just play new music on your phone, listen on your keyboard and learn to play new musics. Yes, the Bluetooth is long awaited feature. Finally yamaha did next step in musical industry.
16. Space / Internal Memory
(Tyros 5: YES 6.7MB| PSR SX-900: YES 4GB)
Finally, Yamaha gave us great opportunity to save many files on a new keyboard. 4GB internal space is good for PSR SX900, but as I already described above, it wourld be great to have an opportunity to add HDD or SSD drive on PSR SX900.
17. Expansion Memory Size
I happy to see 1GB expansion memory size on PSR SX900. Sure, it is good than S970 or another older models. But anyway, I think that 1GB or even 3GB on Genos is small size to make excellent quality sound packs. To have more packs installed on keyboards and make realy quality sounds, I think about 10+ GB expansion memory size. So, I understand that at the moment maybe it is not possible by Yamaha. And some reasons are very familiar to us. in my opinion one of the important and popular reasons is marketing, and sell us new models in new opportunities.
18. Keyboard
I am pleased to announce that the quality of the PSR SX900 keyboard is very high. I will not compare the keyboard quality of SX900 with the tyros5, but I can compare the keyboard quality with junior PSR S Series.
The new FSB Keyboard offers remarkable playability thanks to its heavier initial key resistance and greater key travel. The refined keyboard structure, with an adjusted fulcrum, allows you to play comfortably even on the backs of the keys whilst upgraded components suppress horizontal key movement.
My option
All other functions that I did not indicate above, I consider not very important.
So, after a long time studying and comparing with different yamaha models, I decided to buy YAMAHA PSR SX-900 from official Yamaha Dealer. So, I can say, that I really happy with my new keyboard, and I think that the PSR SX900 is an EXCELLENT keyboard for price.
So, i don't say, that the Tyros 5 is not good keyboard. Sure, that the T5 is very good and professional keyboard, but it is not cheap keyboard. So, I still think, that tyros5 has better design, and has good features.
But anyway, my choose is a PSR SX900. So I call my keyboards MINI GENOS. I hope, that my article will help you to choose between Tyros 5 and PSR SX900, but remember that the choice is yours. And by no means do I swear to you to try to change your own decision. So you have your own decision to choose keyboard for your needs.
Thank you
